I dont want to be a teacher
Ten years ago when I graduated out of IIT Delhi, my salary was over twice what my professor with 20+ years of experience was earning.
The new salaries in the 6th pay commission have been announced. While higher than before still the disparity between my salaries and those of my professors is glaring. Even the director of IIT Delhi makes a fraction of what I make.
Have we got our priorities right?
Teachers are the most selfless people you will ever find. My professors wanted me to do better than them in my life. My professors are happy that I earn a huge salary and am doing better than them. But does it mean I and others in this society dont have any responsibility towards our teachers?
Recently I went to IITs for interviewing students. To these students the best company is the one that pays the most. The job profile doesnt even seem to matter. Has our society set the wrong standards?
Today a degree is just a stepping stone to a high paying job. But does it matter what we learn while earning that degree. Does it matter that we dont respect those who impart this learning to us?
