Technology to Counter Terrorism

computer science researcher
The recent terror attacks in Mumbai left us stunned. Sixty hours that the whole nation saw on their TV screens. Hours that made us proud of our police forces, armed forces, NSG commandos but also hours that made us realize our helplessness.

Never again. But how do we ensure that? We are a nation of superstar programmers, we are the nation that has the famed IITs, we are the nation of proud commandos who dont flinch in front of terrorists. How should each one of us ensure that this does not happen again.

The terrorists were armed with AK series of rifles but even deadlier than that they were techno savvy. They carried Sat phones, blackberry's, GPS and knew how to use these communication devices to their advantage. In this article "Mining telecom graphs to catch terrorists" it is shown how the calling graphs can be used to identify patterns that point to terrorists.

We need to play smarter. We must learn to use technology better than the terrorists.

India recently put Chandrayaan on the moon's orbit. In recent years we have put many remote sensing satellites. Can we use the images from there to keep an eye on our cities. Can we use machine vision technology to keep tab on terrorists? Well indeed we can. In this article "An eye in the sky to track terrorists" it is shown how satellite imaging technology can be used to keep track of terrorists. But images can also be captured using CCTV images. In this article "Using machine vision to track terrorists" it is shown how strategic placing of cameras along with machine vision technology can identify suspicious activity.

The terrorists used the sea route to reach Mumbai. In this article "Securing our coasts against terrorists and enemies" it is shown how we can use sonar and radar technologies to stop attacks from the sea.

We must utilize the skills of our scientists and ensure that we are smarter than 10 terrorists and their supporters. Let's make sure there is no next time.
