Corporate Social Responsibility

An entrust obligation of the corporate world is to take authority of its products, employees, community and the surrounding environment. These duties are known as Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) or Corporate Citizenship or Corporate Social Performance. CSR is a commitment to improve community well-being through discretionary business practices and contributions of corporate resources.

CSR includes philanthropic activities like giving charity to the ones in need, generous corporate donations and serving the society. It also mentions how the company treats its employees, their health and safety, their grievances, team culture, etc. And lastly how the company contributes towards the environment, for example planting of trees, adopting environmentally friendly products, instead of printing; usage of e-mail to avoid depletion of paper.

The concept of CSR is not accepted by all and sundry. There are few who believe that it is not the duty of the corporation to give to the society and that CSR deviates from the fundamental role of business. While some believe that the companies who walk hand in hand with it are at an edge. For example, going green saves money as the expense on electricity and travel can be reduced.

The primary advantage of CSR is that makes you look good in front of potential or present customers as well as the employees. The companies also encourage its employees to contribute into these benevolent deeds. It brings with it a feel-good factor and a variation to the normal curriculum. It has also been found out that the customers tend to switch to or adopt brands that support a cause or are environmentally friendly. And eventually these companies persist longer.
