India summer is just like Santa’s gift for some school children. With the
general elections around the corner, school children of the city from the slums
look for a ‘windfall’ by attending political party rallies. They get a good
amount and gifts from the political parties. India Election 2009 are a good time for the little buds to make a
quick buck. They are happy to earn something of their own-independently.
All political parties bribe the poor, especially those
living in slums, who are their vote banks, to make their public meetings and
election rallies a huge success.
A 37-year-old mother, Savitha from Banaswadi slum admits
that as poor people it was hard to resist money coming their way during polls.
"Yes! We take money to cast our vote," she said.
Not only in rallies but also in public meeting they are
present to shore up the crowd. Besides cash, political parties reward them with
food and gifts for making up the crowds in public meetings.
“Few would question the idea that a healthy democracy
requires citizens, who are attentive, know how to participate in all levels of
society, and actively engage in their communities”, said a senior citizen from
Ram Murtinagar. He also added that, if the small children are not aware of the
dirty politics than the future of Indian politics going to be a darker one.

child, who is a part of an election rally.
