"To read is to empower - To empower is to write - To write is to influence - To Influence is to change - To change is to live..."
Last year I visited around many schools in Ahmedabad and Baroda. My purpose of visit was to meet the students of class 5th to 12th and find out their interest in reading. Here are some interesting things I discovered:
1. Their reading speed is very low. I found with personal survey of more than 5000 school going children fromclass 5th to 12th grade that the reading speed withretention of students is below average. Some statistics are as follows:
5th to 7th Class - English Medium - Reading Speed per minute 60 to 80 words per minute with 50-60% retention.
8th to 10th Class - English Medium - Reading Speed per minute 100 to 120 words per minute with 60-70% retention.
10th to 12th Class - English Medium - Reading Speed per minute 120 to 150 words per minute with 60-70% retention.
2. Majority of the students are more interested inwatching television or playing video games or are fond of computer games and sothere is low motivation for reading.
3. There is no reading role model either in schoolor family either teacher or parents and so reading culture is missed both atschool and family level.
Looking through all these I thought there are three requirements:
1. Motivate students to cultivate reading habit.
2. Help students understand the importance of reading.
3. To aware students about various reading styles in turn to develop their loud and silent reading capacity.
I believe that reading skill is one of the most essential skills for the bright future of children. I have also observed after working with more than 10000 students all around India that dyslexia cannot be the reason forpoor reading habit as now ample of researches has shown us that even dyslexicstudents are voracious reader in fact they are the fastest readers. They love reading once they are awareabout the know-how of reading.
If you feel that this is the need for today's future generation then let us join hands together...
One of my mission is to make this country a powerful place on this planet and this effortof helping students to become good rather great readers will be our contributionto the society for great future leaders.
