How to Select Subjects in Class 10+1
HOW TO SELECT SUBJECTS IN 10+1
In the present day scenario subject selection is done by the students based upon the four main factors. These are:-
Influence of Parents.
· Force their dreams on children, especially if a father could not become an engineer, would like his son to be an engineer.
· No risk taking – Such parents leave career decision to be taken by their children. This category of parents does not want any blame at the subsequent stages in case of any failure. It is very difficult for students of 15-16 years of age to take such important decisions. Selection of a birthday gift for their friend take so much of their time, how can one expect teenagers deciding about their career so rationally at such an young age.
Role Model: - Every family has an impact of somebody else’s family on them. May be family of Mr. ‘B’ is under the influence of the family of his elder brother Mr ‘A’. Children of Mr. ‘B’ will be forced to follow the footsteps of children of Mr. ‘A’. In the neighborhood, if there is a doctor living happily in terms of money & status, the children around his location may plan to become a doctor without understanding the hardships of becoming & living as a doctor.
Influence of Media:- There are four categories of people appearing in the media now a days-
· Film stars
· Cricketers
· Terrorists
· Politicians
Teenagers sometimes tend to get attracted towards these so called professions.
Peer Pressure . I don’t want to be away from my friend so let me also take the same subjects what my friend is taking.
All these inputs are inadequate and would never assist teenagers in taking a rational decision about their career options. The drawbacks of selecting subjects as per the above mentioned factors are:-
· Poor success rate in competitive exams
· Change of stream during or after +2 out of frustration.
· Complete waste of budding potential
· Frequent job hopping & early Onset of burnout
· Poor professional life & hampering home life
The five main important factors based upon which a career decision should be taken are:-
Understanding profile of a student i.e. knowing aptitude, interests, intelligence, personality & study skills.
· Aptitude & Interest . In layman’s language, aptitude is magnitude in each interest line. A child may be interested in ten things but the areas where he is going to enjoy working more is given by his aptitude. Two students of medical college become doctors. One becomes a famous doctor, the other one just remains a doctor. Probably one has an aptitude for medicine; the other person became doctor out of sheer hard work and is leading a mediocre life because he does not have an aptitude for medicine.
· Personality & Intelligence. To be a successful professional you need to have a particular set of personality traits. To be a good lawyer you need to have lucid expression, good memory, keen observation and analytical skills. If you are not good in communication, you may become a lawyer but you would not enjoy being a lawyer. Sometimes your aptitude might indicate medical as a profession but you may not have enough intelligence level to pursue MBBS as the desired course. You might be just suitable for nursing or medical lab technologist courses.
· Study Skills: - After deciding upon aptitude, personality traits, the study skills of a student are evaluated to comprehend whether a student would make it to the desired course or not. One should avoid subject selection only on the basis of percentage of marks obtained. Some students may obtain good marks under supervised environment i.e. in school but may perform poorly in the college atmosphere & vice-versa.
Utility of the qualification as per market scenario: - It is very important that the career option you choose should be able to offer you adequate job opportunities by the time you complete the course. You need an organization that can help you in selecting suitable career options which would remain live in the market for a very long time. It should not happen that your career choice become redundant by the time you qualify. Therefore, it is very important that the selection of subjects in 10+1 should be taken based upon scientific findings of psychometric tests & help of an expert career counsellor. Because once you go wrong, Indian education system does not give you a leverage to change your decision at a later stage, hence there are two options:-
a) Take the right career decision
OR
b) Spend whole life in convincing that your decision was right.
