Peter Drucker, Father Of Modern Management - Concept & Quotes
The source of inspiration
could be , even the social networking sites for igniting passion in
you.
I was going through the messages of my facebook friends , looking for some inspirational input and then suddenly came across the comment made by a friend that - he is reading a book written by Drucker
This man inspired more than one generation of professionals , redefining the original management concept in terms of Knowledge Management.
In 1997 McKinsey Quarterly said: “In the world of management gurus, there is no debate. Peter Drucker is the one guru to whom other gurus kowtow.”
He authored more than three dozen books, translated into almost as many languages.
His career as a writer, consultant and teacher spanned more
than six decades and his revolutionary work turned modern management
theory into a serious discipline.
He influenced or created nearly
every facet of its application, including decentralization,
privatization, and empowerment, and has coined such terms as the
“knowledge worker.”
As mentioned in an article on him , published in The economist on 17th Oct,Peter Drucker ,
- Right from his first management book, “The Concept of the Corporation”,
published in 1946, to his last article, “What Makes an Effective
Executive” (which won the prestigious McKinsey award for the best
article to appear in Harvard Business Review in 2004), never failed to sympathize with the difficulties of managers
and the demands of their task.
- In his 1954 book “The Practice of
Management”, argued that management was one of the major social
innovations of the 20th century, primarily a human activity, not a
mechanical or an economic one.
-Pioneered the idea of the corporation
as a social institution.
As per an interesting article published in KnowledgeWorkerPerformance.com, the concept of Knowledge Workers suggested by him, highlights following six factors while determining their productivity
1. "Knowledge worker's productivity demands that we ask the question: "What is the task?"
2. It demands that we impose the responsibility for their productivity on the individual knowledge workers themselves. Knowledge workers have to manage themselves. They have to have autonomy.
3. Continuing innovation has to be part of the work, the task and the responsibility of knowledge workers.
4. Knowledge work requires continuous learning on the part of the knowledge worker, but equally continuous teaching on the part of the knowledge worker.
5. Productivity of the knowledge worker is not - at least not primarily - a matter of the quantity of output. Quality is at least as important.
6. Finally, knowledge worker productivity requires that the knowledge worker is both seen and treated as an 'asset' rather than a 'cost'. It requires that knowledge workers want to work for the organization in preference to all other opportunities."
His final contribution in the field of knowledge worker productivity, as mentioned in his insistence that - knowledge workers need to learn to manage themselves.
Let us now go through some of his famous Quotes to understand his epoch making contribution in revolutionizing the "Philosophy of Modern Management" :-
My favorite - "The best way to predict the future is to create it."
1.Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.
2.Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.
3.Management by objective works - if you know the objectives. Ninety percent of the time you don't.
4.Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes.
5.Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship. The act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth.
