Do Deemed University work like money making machines?

In India there are many universities who are working like deemed universities. The students who took admission in these universities might feel that they got the admission in one of the best university and their future is safe and secure. But after the last episode of Deemed Universities all students and their parents are in dilemma about their present and more about the future. The government is assuring the students that they will not face any problem due to scraping their status.

The government has appointed a committee to look into the matter and submit a report over the functioning of the deemed universities. The committee is headed by P N Tondon, and in its report the committee says that the deemed universities are working like money making machines. They are more concerned about the revenue and money rather than the study, research and standards of education. They are mainly concerned about the fees generated by the admission rather then than promoting the research work and academic work.

The committee also suggested to make a national level committee for fixing the structure of the fee for all the deemed universities and they should also make the provision of reviewing the fee from time-to-time. Most of the deemed universities are not working according to the government norms. They have designed a fee structure which is comparatively very high as compared to the proposed fee structure of the government. Many of the universities have created their own fee committees to justify their fee structure, according to the report which have been submitted to the apex court.

The Committee also discloses that there is not even a single example of technology transfer, generation and new research conducted by these universities. The report says "Except a few public-funded institutions, quality research is not done in any of the deemed universities. Research, which is a major component of university, is not being carried out by these institutions." Even though the UGC guidelines speak about holding an all-India entrance test to enroll students, the deemed universities never follow any common entrance examination. They conduct their own entrance which is very often restricted to limited geographical locations or regions.
