IIM A to set up Hyderabad campus; AP govt offers land, funds
The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has agreed to set up a satellite campus near Hyderabad. The institute is in dialogue with Andhra government to acquire land and funds, which the state government had earlier proposed.
While there have been rumour in past, this is for real. The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM A) has agreed to set up a satellite campus near Hyderabad. The institute is in dialogue with Andhra government to acquire land and funds, which the state government has proposed earlier. To begin with, IIM A will offer executive management programs at this new campus, and not the full time MBA programs.
In a press statement issued to media on June 29, a copy of which is with MBAUniverse.com, IIM A has said, “At the instance of the Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP), the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) is engaged in discussions with the Government of Andhra Pradesh for setting up an IIMA campus in Hyderabad.”
It is learnt that the decision to build a new campus was taken at a board meeting of the premier B-school on June 24, according to government officials.
IIM A also confirmed that it has asked the AP Government to allocate 150 acre of land and provide funding to the tune of Rs. 100 crore to establish the campus.
Further IIM A plans to start with executive MBA education at its Hyderabad campus. Said IIM A, “The Institute plans to begin operations by offering Executive Education Programmes and subsequently it may explore the possibility of starting academic programmes on the campus.”
The Institute will link the campus at Ahmedabad with the Hyderabad campus through use of technology, for seamless operations between the two campuses.
It is learnt that the process was initiated by the late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who had written to the IIM A, urging it to set up a campus in his state. He had promised to provide land near Hyderabad, and also, if necessary, arrange an interest-free loan to the tune of Rs 100 crore. However, the proposal went on the back burner following his death in September 2009. The new chief minister, K Rosaiah, wrote a letter to the IIM- A in May, reiterating the commitment of the state government.
