Americanisation of Indian Music

Business relationship executive
For the last so many years Indian music is getting americanised. The name given to it was "Remix version" of songs.R.D.Burman the renowned music director who composed many hit songs in Hindi ,with western music toned well and more of rock and roll rhythm and with melodious tunes are even now the hits of all. The new remix music directors have made all those into a kind of "street dhabawala singer"kind who sings in one pitch and the dholak is beaten on a pitch out of tune. Our new music directors shaving their heads and wearing ear rings and bangles and chains like the black rap singers and composers are chewing the good old songs like cockroaches craving to eat the leftover brains of a mad cow.You can see them dancing and singing with the latest americanised version of good old songs whether it is punjabi, urdu or Hindi. The fever spread to other languages too.The singer will sing on his own way, rhythm not matching to the song, and the other tracks not at all in harmony with the vocals or rhythm.A tumbling and mumbling of noise. And a little bit of rap in between like your neighbour's dog barking at you when you are in conversation loudly over the mobile phone with your old mom in home town that you have to yell for her to hear due to network issue. Believe me..if you have all those mixers and cables and software available in your studio all imported americanised mixers, microphones, keyboard and 3-4 laptops with the latest audio software, you can play around recording voices and become a Remix music director.

Sing one "dhabawala"folk song Like "third floor ke neeche kya hai.. discotheque hai hai hai..." thirdfloor ke andar kon hai? ek khubsurat ladki hai lad lad lad..."aaihii aahi aahi...and get it recorded. It will become the remix hit for the coming week and will be the number one song in the hit list. You know how? Our remix intellects will make it horrifyingly audible using all the instrument noises messed up in different tracks and then editing the voice in such a way that even it will even beat  song in the US number one hit list.

Now we have some traditional families who had promoted Hindustani classical music worldwide and had enough fame in this regard. Some names i would like to mention here are Ustad amjad ali khan and Pandit Ravishankar. They made frequent trips to US and other nations to spread Indian music and it was highly appreciated by the world. They presented concerts too.But I had never seen these maestros wearing shorts, bermudas and T-shirt or having tatoo in their body, wearing low waist jeans showing off their branded underwear to the public. They always maintained the traditional attire in which they look elegant and dignified. But the Americanised look of these maestros came after their grand children stepped into the world of music.Their grand children hardly like to wear clothes. The old kharana style of kurta-pyjama or silk saree or churidar started vanishing. The daughters and grand-daughters wanted an americanised version of Hindustani music to be projected throughout the world.Don't know when the media is pasting a photograph or video in You tube of Pandit Ravishankar in Shorts and Tshirts jumping around on stage like heavy metal lead guitarists, playing the sarod or sitar.Ooops !Hold your breath!Americanised sithar and sarod concert.I am a great fan of rock, hard rock n heavy metal even progressive rock which I am trying hard to swallow. But cannot tolerate this Americanised Indian music creeping in.

That is one part of the story. Now let us come back to India. The remix rajas are popping up like mushrooms in Bollywood and all cinewoods. Old soft rock and songs of blues singers were copied and indianised by our old music directors which suited the Indian themes and acting. But now anybody can become a music director or make albums of their own if they know how to use the latest software and have mixers at your studio. You can make believe the public that you are a trained musician and you can even compose lyrics on your own .It is quite easy and simple.

For example:Tum mere ho.mein tere ho,ho mein tere aur tum ho mere"aur meine pyaar kiya tumhi se,tum mujhe pyaar karo"
Put the reverse of each line and add masala and the track of different musical instruments and the song is ready. If you have katrina kaif or mallika to dance around wearing frocks, where the camera is focused below her hips.(Chamak ishq ka....hai re tere ishq ka...)

Even if you make the song, you got to sit with the movie director or the dance master and check if it suits the gyrations of the heroine dancing around. And the hero like a drunken monkey, seeking the sweet halwa smile of the heroine and eyes rolling like a comedy actor. That is how you create remix songs and become the Aashiq of the youngsters. You can sing with your nose, throat or put more reverb on your voice or put flange to your voice so that it sounds like a "Frog in water" and nobody can make out the absurdity or mistakes you make in your voice. They have remixers and software to make you the "King of Remix songs"Thank God Elvis Presley is no more with us.If he was alive he would have been the biggest "Killer of Remix singers".
