How much pressure can a student handle?

With the leaking of AIEEE question paper yesterday, many students who were to appear for it, might have faced hardship, in the form of quandary, confusion and anger, until new question paper was set in and exam conducted.  Fate of over 12 lakhs students was held in jeoparady. It was good that forged leaking was learnt before the exam, had it been after, again poor students would have to appear for retest, undergoing exam pressure again. I wonder, is it not a big question in front of every parents “How much pressure can a student handle?

With so many competitive exams on fore, with a pressure to excel in a life, aren’t our younger generation forced into pressure and stress. From the time child is born, parents starts dreaming about their future career as a doctor or engineer or some professional. No wonder, many insurance companies are doing brisk business by designing or customizing their policies to suits parents needs to provide timely money for their child’s educational needs. With an interview system for admission in schools, its not only parents who feels pressure, but they pressurize child to mug the answers of routine questions.

In school, child has to show his strength not only in studies but in extracurricular activities. Parents feel happy to keep their child occupied with some or the other activies throughout the day. School, extra classes, then some extracurricular activies and so on. From the time child is born, initial 3 years of his life are spent without pressure, rest all his life he has feel some or the other pressure.

Comes critical year of 10th with board exam, and child, who grows up to a teenager by this time, has to show his mettle by living upto his parents expectations of being in merit list, or in a league of 90% holder. If a child scores less, its more of his parents who are sad than child himself.  This is one of the reasons for teenage depression, when they are not able to stand upto their parents expectations.

Child has to face competitions on every step of his life, to show he is superior to his peers.  For admission to Engineering and Medical colleges across India, child has to give an exam.  State run engineering/medical colleges has different entrance, there are many deemed universities which keep their own entrance. I really feel pity for a student who is crushed under so many competitive exams, to secure one seat for himself. With so many competition in market, many private coachings do abounding business, charging more than the income of child’s father. That too builds up stress into childs mind to excel. Its like a double burden financial as well as emotional.

I strongly feel, there should be standard board of studies for junior college so that a student does not get burdened.  Curriculum should be designed in such a manner to make student ready for impending competition, in order to save financial loss by private coaching classes. There are many college teacher who take private coaching, there should be ban on such activities, so that teacher teach well off in college. Teachers should be made accountable for increasing percentage of students passing from their class.  Parents stop demanding excellence from their children but accept them as they are. Learn about child’s interest, the field in which he has to make carrer, facilitate them with all the information and resources in their liked field. With globalization and liberalization, opportunities are created not only in technical field but many other fields as well, be it communication, art, commerce and many more to name.

Let the child enjoy his childhood to the fullest devoid of stress, let them blossom, nurture, grow happily.

Lets us wish a new India full of opportunities for younger generation irrespective of their social standing, rich or poor. Let everybody get equal opportunity to their basic right “A good education”.
