Constitution Change
It is more than 50 years since we had our constitution. A growing democracy should make it a policy to make importamt changes in our constitution in the light of our experience once every 25 years or so. Our great leaders of the 1950s would not have had the foresight to think about the fragmented politics and the multiplicity of parties that exist in India. Soon after Independence when there was only a Congress party in the national scene, great minds like Ambedkar or Nehru would not have expected that the country would be ruled by a coalition of political parties. Now when things have reached such a pass where even parties with 2 or 3 MPs are holding the country to ransom in the name of supporting the ruling coalition, we need to urgently review the consitution so that we can have stable and strong governments in future. In the current Parliament too, the Marxists had for the initial 3 years prevented the PM and FM from continuing with the reforms which our country badly needed. If we have to get rid of poverty and continue to achieve 7% plus economic growth we need to have a stable single party government at the centre.
We may therefore amend our constitution to permit only national parties to contest the parliamentary elections. Only parties which got more than 25 % share of the vote only need be permitted to contest parliamentary elections. Even in the state assembly elections only parties which got more than a similar share should be permitted. I am sure, this would in no way reduce the strength of our democracy. Let our national parties start talking in this direction at least !!
