Some Hotmail users posted complaints on Microsoft's online forum stating that their messages had disappeared in full or in some cases e-mails in their inboxes were sent to deleted mail folders.

Microsoft Windows Live support technicians were quoted by The Associated Press as saying that the Hotmail team is aware of the problem and working on a fix.

However, the severity of the problem could not be ascertained as it was unclear from the complaints' postings, according to the news agency.

Declining to disclose the cause of the glitch, Microsoft spokeswoman Catherine Brooker said that at that point it appeared to be a limited issue, and Microsoft was working with the affected individual users.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers," Brooker said.

About 476 pages of complaints regarding lost and deleted e-mails that date back to early November 2010 have been logged in the Microsoft's forum, The Associated press said.
