The drafting committee of constitution wouldn’t even thought that the Right to Freedom of Speech and expression could be used in such a way by the press or media that instead of working for the good of society it will work for the sole motive of their T.R.P. Ratings. Proactive media has completely overshadowed the genuine definition of NEWS, which actually means news of national importance.
I don’t find any glimpse of national importance in many of their news which are either self created or unnecessarily stretched. Commercialization has entered into the Indian market in such a way that it did not spare anything whether its education, or media. The basic purpose of the media is to make people aware about the news of national importance but one can eaisly see an aberration from that. I think the mess was created by the opening of 24 hours News channel. Media is supposed to be the prominent feature of any country because the powers given to the media are such that if used in the appropriate way, can be very handy. The best example of the perfect utilisation we can quote is sending accused behind the bar in jessica lal murder case. But these examples are very rare. The worst thing with the media is that there is no follow up of news which really requires and i think there hunt for the new news is the main reason for the same. i would like to quote an example of a news which really requires follow up, Yes I am talking about the scam done by Mr. Ashok Malhotra which relates to the possession of V.I.P. number cars and flats. Mr. Ashok Malhotra used to run a canteen in legistative assembly in delhi and that is the most relevant part of this scam what i think. There are number of cases like that which requires serious attention but our media is busy in improving their T.R.P. ratings. I think this is the right time to put check upon the unusual activities of the media otherewise it will be too late . I dont know whether the legislature is sleeping or they are just trying to ignore it. Indian Judiciary can also do a substantial part in putting some check on the unwanted activies of the media. The list of cases where media created the mess is a huge one and its really difficult for me to narrate all those experiances here. Some of them are given below.
1. A Concocted sting operation done by one media person with a school teacher to
gainn publicity
2. Ayushi murder case where the statemets released by the media made the whole
case so complex that state was forced to involve the CBI.
It is pertinent to mention here that every statement released by the media creates an impression or leave an image in the mind of public at large. Somehow and somewhere it can be harmful for the judiciary in a sense that it may affect their decision though its very remote. So its my appeal or
request to media persons that they should think twice before releasing any statement against any indvidual or any group of people. It will be a nightmare for any father that he is facing accusation in her daughter murder case like happened in arushi murder case and our proactive media played a very crucial role in this nightmare.
