Mayawati and the currency garland
Mayawati, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is the first dalith women Chief Minister of any states in India. She projects herself as the icon of the millions of India’s daliths.
Uttar Pradesh state holds an important place in Indian Politics because of its size and the number it sends to the Parliament (80 MPs). In the present political scenario, where no single party could able to get the full mandate of the people, winning this battle ground has become more important. Caste and religion have been dominant factors in this largest but poorest state.
Kum. Mayawati, could manage to bring her party (BSP) into power during the last general elections to the State Assembly magically, leaving her opponents to utter dismay. She successfully solved the problem of political arithmetics by bringing the two ends of a caste string into a liner equation.
For the last two decades particularly after the demolition of Babri Masjid, one could see the torn political scenario in this poor state. With the broken verdict, no combinations could able to provide a stable Government. During this turmoil period, the development of the state was gone to dust. People having vexed with these developments, given a mandate in her favour thanks to the caste combinations she cooked.
Lot more was expected of her by the people of the state, in contrast she raised the curtain for politics of vengeance and self promotion as soon as she came to power. She sacked at one pen stroke thousands of police personnel employed during the regime of her arch-rival Mulayam Singh, and suspended senior IAS officers, who happens to be at the top positions in the previous regime. She went on installing the statues of her and her mentor investing huge public money, despite Court directions. Public interest was conveniently neglected.
Congress lost its ground after the emergence of Mulayam and Mayawati in the state, but thanks to the efforts of Rahul Gandhi, it seems to have gaining ground as seen from the recent results. It’s definitely going to be a blow to both Mayawathi and Mulayam since they equally hitherto shared the vote bank of Congress.
Mayawati having smelled the tremors in her vote bank resorted to play the caste victimization card, since she did nothing for this socially deprived caste to win their confidence on positive note. In this process, she deliberately accepted the currency garland in a public meeting with full knowledge of the consequences and size of uproar it creates in the political sectors. She did the act in order to instigate the caste sentiments by self-victimization, drifting the uproar on caste lines and benefit from it.
Politicians of the day are thick skinned; they don’t care any criticism from any corner. They are only concerned about their selfish ends. As long as there are people who cast their vote on caste or some other constricted basis, the whims of these politicians go on charm. People have to act wisely.
