Politics + Religion = Communal conflits

Executive secretary
India is one of the most – if not the most – religiously diverse societies in the world. Hinduism and Buddhism were born on this subcontinent while Islam and Christianity arrived into India through invasions.

According to the 2001 census, Hinduism accounts for 80.5% of the population of India. Islam (13.4%), Christianity (2.3%) and so on are the other major religions being followed by the people of India.

Religious tolerance is established both by law and custom in this country. The Constitution of India declares the nation to be a secular republic. The Constitution of India also declares the right to freedom of religion as a fundamental right. Citizens of India are generally tolerant of each other's religions and retain a secular outlook.

Communal conflicts have periodically swamping India now and then right from its independence. The roots of this dissension largely lie in the underlying tensions created long back by the divide and rule policy of the British Rulers, between sections of majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities.

In recent decades, communal tensions and religion-based politics have become more prominent, coinciding with a rise in Islamic terrorism.

Political parties on religious setting always try to create an atmosphere of insecurity among different sections of people for their political survival. These parties don’t allow serene conditions to prevail. This is what is happening time and again in this holy country. Whether it is Hinduism, Christianity, Islam or some other, every religion preaches about Universal brotherhood. Everybody has a right to have his own beliefs and disbeliefs about the religion, but he has no right to attack anyone in the name of the religion.

Mankind was there on the earth even before the different religions came into being. Spiritual leaders/saints preached the societies against barbaric cultures of those uncivilized days to instill some kind of discipline. Different societies followed different ways preached by these spiritual leaders/saints. Thus religions came into being.

The religion is a way of life to lead the life in a disciplined way. Mere birth can not decide the religion of a person. It is the interest of the individual to choose a path from among the different paths to know about the creator and to lead his life in a spiritual and disciplined way. Today, we are branding an individual’s religion just because he has taken birth in a particular community. It is ridiculous to fight each other in the name of the god/religion.

Rationale thinking about religious beliefs and disbeliefs is required. But unfortunately this rationale thinking is missing. Taking advantage of this, political parties are creating tensions among different communities for their political survival. Let us not become prey to the plans of these wicked politicians.
