India entered into a new phase of rapid growth beginning late ‘90s.

How much ground the country covered since 1998?

The list below is certainly not exhaustive…

  • Explosive growth in telecom– from 18.6 million subscribers of telephone lines in 1998 to almost 384.7 million by the end of 2008, a TWENTY times growth (second only to China). Didn’t we invent a new social communication protocol …give me a missed call?

  • Robust economic growth: National Income went up by 223% since 1998 pushing India to the 12th rank in the top 20 economies in the world.
  • International Player…first time..country was invited to the Forum on tackling global economic downturn in Nov last.
  • Rise in High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI: net asset exceeding $1 million) grew worldwide by 8.3% in 2006. In India they mushroomed at 20.5% in 2006 and 22.6% in 2007.
  • Super Rich…Top 4 of the 8 were Indians (WSJ: 2008). 53 Indians jockeyed into the Forbes List of 1125. Interestingly 25% of the wealth of Indian Uber Rich came from the SELF MADE entrepreneurs!
  • Driving more cars to earn Bush’s wrath for being the (?) culprit in global pollution along with China! Cars on the Indian roads more than doubled (238% ) in the last decade. This lead to a very (oil) thirsty India that gulped larger share of fuel..from 1.5% of the world’s consumption in 1998 to over 3.1% in 2008

  • Chandrayan, an unmanned mission to Moon...A Small step… or a Giant one?
  • World’s backoffice, Knowledge process, Business process..the works. India is the dominating star of global outsourcing, cornering (approx.) 80-85% of the world's offshore market.
  • The only country outside NPT to get Nuclear Deal with US… publicly.
  • And after the beast, the beauty: 1994 : India bagged both Miss Universe and Miss World Crowns repeating the feat in 2000 again (another Miss World coming in 1999). The World took a notice after a long slumber since 1966 ...
All this came with its own price
  1. Multiple terror attacks; last one on the scale of NY, London, Madrid
  2. Satyam joined the (in) famous queue of global corporate scandals
I have not added the growing income disparity...a collateral impact of any market economy.
