Lokpal Bill,,Are we splitting the hair?
Times of India reported today that the demand for including the PM within the ambit of the proposed Lokpal Bill is drawing flake from Congress Party. Their spokesperson has accused Anna to be very "undemocratic" in his demand. Anna Hazare, making the demand, point out that without this the Bill will be a toothless tiger.
While arguments fly either way, a few things will keep the matter in perspective. The Prime Minister of India is elected as a Memeber of Parliament (MP) or, is mandated to become one if not elected as an MP by the people. So as far as people's mandate goes PM enjoys the same as any other Cabinet Minister or MP! PM is designated as Head of the Government by the Parliament. Note that the Bill covers Ministers as well.
By moving past such thorny issues quickly and moving forward with a bill that has been languising for over 42 years, Congress has a clear opportunity to show to the people and to the world that it is coming down very hard on corruption.
