Big cracks have started appearing in Team Anna. In the last one week two prominent members of the team were physically attacked – Prashant Bhushan right in his lawyer's chamber in the Supreme Court premises, in full view of Television network. He brought in Kashmir issue and touched a raw nerve. Kejriwal, the other high profile member, had a shoe hurled at him at a rally, and was accused of bringing in politics in the “crusade” against corruption. This raises the question about why Anna has allowed the strong demand against corruption to get derailed on these other issues? Kashmir is a separate problem with international implications, and mixing the two is sure a recipe for disaster. The call for not voting for the Congress candidate in the Hissar By Polls (Congress candidate lost the seat) was definitely political. And Anna Hazare's "maun vrata" (vow of silence) has not helped the matter much! One cannot escape the conclusion that some members in Anna’s team may have their own axes to grind. Once Anna built a powerful ground swell of a movement, the political ambitions of some are coming out into the open. There is visible evidence of impact of his movement. Governments have swung into action to stamp out the scam tainted people in high places. The ex CM of Karnataka has been taken into custody. One ex Minister of the Central Cabinet is in the CBI net on 2G scam. Premises of a son of an ex-Prime Minister was raided…and all this in the last 10 days! At the same time there are budding signs of reaction. A subdued whisper of reviewing Right To Information Act is circulating.Anna should not allow the momentum to fail, as he owes to the people he galvanized against corruption. Distancing himself, or better still, disassociating himself, from political elements is probably the best service he can do to his country now. The elements trying to piggyback on this movement need him more than he needs them. Silence for Anna is not an option!
