"The state government disallows screening procedures, i.e any tests or interviews of the child or communication with parents for admission," a recent government order said.

A senior government official told a news agency, "This prevention would apply to all schools as per clause (n) of section 2 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009."

As per the government organize, "anyone who subjects a child to any form of screening procedure shall be punishable with fine of upto Rs 50,000."

Further, the government has also restricted all school teachers from engaging in private tuition or teaching privately in their homes.

Until last year, children in Meghalaya (Kindergarten upto Class XI) face stringent screening procedures from school management.

There are 6612 government-run SSA schools in the state catering to 623221 children studying in Class I to VIII.
