Material Possessions - An Artificial Symbols of Happiness
Nobody is born with materialistic attitude and philosophy. Everyone has a philosophy of life, whether we realize that or not. Philosophy generally instilled into mind in three different stages of human life. The bulk of philosophy is formed in the first seven years of childhood, then another influential period between the mid teens into early twenties. From that point onwards, philosophy does not change majorly. However, after later stage we start reassess our philosophy.
Philosophy is vital part of our subconscious processing which influences every decision we make and it is reprogramming our life. Philosophy comes from the Culture we live in, Family upbringing, Religion, education and social culture. A major influencing factor on our philosophy is the culture that we live in and in particular the culture that we grew up in. Every family has its own culture and philosophy and everyone growing up within that family is brainwashed to some extent by that family philosophy. Religion is largely a factor of where we were born, or where our ancestral family was born, rather than a conscious choice that they made themselves. The role of education system has a major impact on our philosophy and mindset. We mix in certain social groups and those social groups tend to hold together because the group members have a similar philosophy on life. Hence that group is constantly subconsciously reinforcing that philosophy. If we move into a social group that has a different philosophy to your own then the power of the group philosophy will draw your philosophy toward it.
Materialism is directly or indirectly linked with our philosophy. Every human being is more or less materialistic and but some people are extremely materialistic. People who grow up in unfortunate social situations - where they are not treated very nicely by their parents or when they experience poverty or they feel insecure or they have lack of self-confidence or they have got unexpected growth (in terms of money, position – which they don’t deserve) or even the threat of death, they become more materialistic.
Materialistic person - who has a preoccupation with the owning of material possessions, especially goods and wealth, and equates them to happiness and fulfillment. Owning of the possessions is motivated by emotional reasons (like Social status, look better & feel better, etc) rather than functional reasons. Materialism has become the trend in our society and people started linking Happiness with Material Possessions.
In reality Material Possessions is an artificial Symbols of Happiness. So, change the mindset and try to achieve Happiness without Material Possessions.
