“Desi chapel, Videshi idiot and car porn”
The past few days have been eventful for the headliners - Jarnail Singh hit Chidambaram with his shoe, Rush Limbaugh calls Indian’s slum dog and the fourth Fast and the Furious movie is out. But the most eventful is certainly the Indian election. This is the world’s biggest democracy going for its political leaders. This election has turned out to be the best political slugfest that I have seen a really long time. There are more people here than in an open bar, let the charade begin!
I am just back from my annual Easter holiday (had gone to Tasmania) my dad informs me that my voter identification card has arrived. I am based in Melbourne now and unfortunately I will not be able to vote. Ironically this is the first time in my life that I want to vote (desperately) but life and work have displaced me. But I will be watching this election from every possible channel of information. With all its controversies and paradox this is the most crucial election of our times, we need good leadership.
Now to Jarnail Singh shoe attack on the Home Minster, this was done to express his anger over the Central Bureau of Investigation's decision to give a clean chit to Jagdish Tytler for the Sikh riots. After making it to the headlines, the Congress party quickly did some damage control by denying tickets to the accused and Sheila Dixit announced on national television that it is gracious of the Congress party to do so. Seriously Ms Dixit, the congress isn’t doing any favors to anybody by doing this (if anything it is looking to score brownie points). Point in case – When Kevin Rudd was elected the Australian Prime minister he apologized from the Parliament to the stolen generation for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. This was not only a historic moment but also symbolic as the collective conscience of a society had reached a common consensus at a national level. That is gracious not an opportunist regret (I am sorry, but your party’s sorry will not suffice).
Rush Limbaugh is a noted U.S radio host who is a staunch Republican Party supporter. He recently referred to the Indian BPO workers as slum dogs on live radio, yes; this is the same guy who wished that Obama would fail. Does the U.S. Republican party have to really debase itself (isn’t it enough that Elizabeth Hasselbeck does it on regular intervals). I will tell you what Mr. Limbaugh, dish it out, we take pride in everything we represent – good, bad and ugly. We unapologetically accept our third world status with dignity and pride, surely it’s a challenge but we are working for better tomorrow. At least we don’t live in the biggest delusion of grandeur (war on terror, financial crises). As far as calling us slumdog – cheap shot! Get over yourself!
There is a slight adrenaline rush in the opening scene of the new Fast and Furious movie, slick and exciting the scene ends with an explosion. Does the movie sizzle, well in parts it does. Critics are as usual carping its trashy and cheesy some have even called it car porn (guess what I prefer car porn to poverty porn) but this movie does not preach to be something it isn’t. I paid $17 to watch this movie, I got my worth, sexy cars, beautiful girls, Vin Diesel towers, Paul Walker carries his weight (effectively) Michelle Rodriguez rocks, the sound track is smoking (hot)and the cars are super hot baby. Enjoy!
