Volunteering at a US hospital

Retired Times of India correspondent; associated with a Mysore green group - http://www.fortmysore.blogspot.com/
I connected with Joan Perry, a Canadian resident in the US,   via a  comment she left on my  Mysore photo blog.  Joan who runs a photo blog  on her city ,  Charleston S Carolina ,  had spent her childhood in Assam.  She writes about her school days in Shillong  in her blog .   Makes a fascinating read.

In a post to mark the ‘Volunteer week’ in April last Joan wrote about her current life and work  – ‘ what the heck I actually do’.  She co-ordinates day-to-day routine of volunteers who turn up to work at a hospital in her town.  The hospital  gets over 450 volunteers a month  -  in ages  ranging from 14 years to 90 plus .  By her book the hospital  has logged 82,000 volunteer hours in the last one year. They have helped  the hospital with clerical support, have filled water pitchers; they help feed, make rounds on patients,  push wheelchairs, help in the nursery and drive golf carts.

” I have a singing volunteer, a couple of clowns and pet therapists whose trained dogs wear official hospital  ID tags”, writes Joan Perry, hospital director of volunteers and my new-found blogger friend in South Carolina.
