Staying Positive

Retired GM from BHEL India

All of us are working under enormous pressure of Timely, Quality and Economic delivery. Jobs assigned to each one of us are High in Number, Having Multi dimensional interfaces and invariably there is a pressure to deliver in a time constraint. This needs - Continuous & Correct Analysis of the situation and the work in hand, Instant switching of Mind from one job / problem to another, Quick, on the spot Decisions, Continuous - Coordination / Follow up, Revision in day’s work-plan to meet exigencies and Extended work Hours.

Add to this the Pressure of External Environment. This, over a period of time, results in Mental Stress, Fatigue, Irritation, Depression, Doubt over Self, Work becoming a Burden and, last but not least, in Sleepless Nights.

Not surprisingly, the number of cases of employees breakdown in the aforementioned scenario is on the rise.

It has thus, become absolutely essential for all of us to defy the above environ and devise ways to remain positive in spite of these odds.

Control over many of our emotions may help us remain positive. To start with, I wish to share my views on the most simple, least costly but unimaginably effective expression of ours, ‘Smile’.

“Smile is a curve which makes things straight.”- How beautifully the author of this quote has summarized the importance and effectiveness of smile. We find it easier to approach a person with a smile on his face. Remember, smile is contagious. It sends positive signals and if one person is smiling, others also follow suit. The atmosphere around turns positive in no time and helps in discussions/negotiations completed much faster and with much better solutions.

Added to this, no cost is involved in generating a smile and one can experience of his/her own of the extent to which it increases the face value.

It’s not very difficult to ‘Smile’ and it does call for very little effort. Smile is a very little (small) requirement for staying positive, but as Jon Kabat-Zinn has put it, “The little things? The little moments? They aren't little.”

Lets have the resolve to smile as the author of the quote, “Smile, even if it is a sad smile, because sadder than a sad smile, is the sadness of not knowing how to smile.” has.

I have decided to ‘Smile’ and keep smiling. What about you???
