Maintaining Relationships is tough at times, but it is not a really Himalayan task to do. Be it personal or business, relation is always like a thin thread which can break at the mere touch of a sharp tool. It takes many years for a person to get into good relationship with another. But to destroy the relation, it just takes a few seconds. I have seen close relations breaking into situations where the persons avoid going places just to avoid the presence of a person. This was one of the reasons that dragged me into writing this article. What I am saying here is about the personal and professional relationships that we normally come across, rather than the typical business relations where client relationship management is spoken a lot.

It is always easy to see the relations between people breaking due to silly reasons. Often we laugh out thinking of such simple things mattering so much, in order to break a relation. But we never think of such a thing when we are involved in the story. What is the main reason that makes people to get rid of the acquaintance which they have acquired after years?

When I think of such an issue, one thing that runs into my mind is that humans and our thoughts are very self-centered. We seldom think of others’ feelings/thoughts for a matter anytime. Many of the issues arise because of the fact that we never think of any matter fitting into the other persons’ shoes. One might feel this after ruining the feelings of the person, that the other person was right. But of what use it has at this situation? Once an acquaintance has been broken, it never gets back the same strength again. Professionally, this is one important thing because the impact of such an issue can ruin the business as a whole. I have seen company being closed, because partners take over the ego of themselves into such levels. Once, a person who was a good performer with the project dependent on him, in a company went on leave due to his personal reason. His manager took it over his ego and created hype on the issue, which led to the person leaving the company, and thereby making the company lose the project. Most of the times, we are reluctant in thinking of ourselves the other position. I am not telling that all the issues are a result of this behavior or can be solved like this. I think if we start thinking of the other person’s situation, many of the egoistic clashes can be avoided.

Managing good relationship within a team is very necessary in the corporate environment, in which most of us currently are. The main reason of maintaining a good relation with the fellow team members is the fact that in the current phase of industry, it is not a single person who delivers the complete outcome. Be it a product or a service that gets built, it is the combined effort of a team that produces the final outcome. So the new generation managers need to give a very big importance to relationship building with the team under them. This becomes more important when we take example of the software industry. The reason is that the individuals are highly qualified engineers with their own personalities and egos. So how can we be get good outcome from the team without much of an effort? One of the ways to do this is by providing proper environment which is quite friendly as well as professional for work. After all, we are humans and we like getting appreciations at any point of time. Just a walk to your colleague and a pat on his shoulders should do the trick. A simple word of appreciation is going to do the work that a sum of money cannot do. I am not saying that money does not matter at all, because it is the simple matter that we are putting our efforts and working for a company or institution. But apart from money, a word of appreciation can make the person feel homely and open up with us.

Apart from this, one thing which needs to be done is constant interaction with the persons involved. This is one matter, avoiding which; a good relationship cannot be maintained at any time. Be it professional or personal, good relationships need constant and regular interactions. Talking about professional teams, managers should have regular meetings with the team, as well as one-on-one meetings with team members. This can improve the quality of work that your team puts up. In personal relationships as well, this is very important. Even with our close relatives, interaction is one key thing that requires special attendance. Till one keeps interacting constantly with other person, the strength of relation stays.

These are some of the important things which I felt crucial in maintaining personal and professional relationships. This would assist a lot in gaining confidence among the people whom we interact with in day-to-day life. The matters put in are not mandatory in our daily lives, but these can improve the closeness of relationships that we maintain and this can help us more in future. The importance of maintaining good relationships is important in the current social setup where the pace of life is so fast that one may get left alone if he opts the other path.
