How is paper effecting our planet

Senior Software Quality Engineer

We all are aware that we are using paper for taking print outs for all of our purpose, we are taking printouts, if we are not finding it satisfactory we are tearing off those, & we are taking again, we are taking printouts in white papers to show it to our higher officials also, the following is the brief history of paper we are using:

    * For every three thousand & five hundred papers (3500), that we are using three trees are cut in the primary rain forest. We know that around sixty percent of the Earth's eco-life is dwelling in the primary rainforest. this causes a serious depletion of natural vegetation, which affects the various factors in the nature, the food cycle is broken which causes the severe extinction of the various animals, millions of tons of top soil are eroded which causes land slides & the earth becomes useless for ordinary purpose also. The green house effect is also worth mentioning here, which leads us to another ice age. If we do not stop cutting the trees we will have to show the future generation the animals which we have seen, touched, & lived with, in the same paper that we have produced from the forest trees.

    * Here we should have to consider the environmental effects that are caused during the production & processing of the paper -

Around 1000 liters of water goes to washing of wood pulp during the initial stage. In that around 70 percent are wasted & balance only 30 % of water is only recycled, which causes a severe drain in the potable water & the water table of the land. The waste water causes additional problems like polluting the ponds, streams, rivers causing the death of fishes & aquatic life forms.

The power requirement of producing a ton of paper is around 217 units (for initial processing , the secondary & refining process not included) , which we all know that are produced by burning the fossil fuels which adds up the effect of GREEN HOUSE gases.

Also we are investing money in procuring of stationary especially papers & paper related products. Also we are incurring money to control the information printed in the papers, on the fear of leaking important information about the company & persons.

* By looking up the above facts we can come to a conclusion that usage of paper is to be reduced, for that we can  follow the points mentioned below:

1) Never take print outs - We know that this is highly impossible , but we should also consider that we can now  send message to any body through electronic form ,even to their mobile phones , so we should reduce the hard copy & use only soft copy for draft copies, after it gets approval, we can finally take a fair copy if any needed .

2) We can take rough copies in one side papers, so that we can reduce the paper usage through 20- 30 %.

3) We can note down casual matters / to do things /remainders in one side paper rather than a fresh paper, as the paper will become useless after the end of the day.

4) Internal communication brouchers / check lists / inter department memos can be sent in one side paper or electronic form rather than fresh papers.

5) We should always insist in recycled papers while buying, so that we can save another tree.

6) In todays world papers are made from sugar cane remains / grass also, we should prefer those rather than others.

7) We can use alternate materials like rayon, cloth for taking print outs, it will look different for presentation than the traditional look.

Last but not the least,

WE ARE THE ONLY SPECIES IN THE WORLD WHICH CAN SAVE ALL OTHER SPECIES, INCLUDING OURSELVES,

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A PRINT OUT OF THIS FOR SHOWING IT TO OTHERS, BUT FORWARD THIS TO AS MANY PERSONS U KNOW.

OR TAKE A SINGLE COPY OF THIS MAIL IN ONE SIDE PAPER & DISPLAY IT SO THAT ALL IN YOUR SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND OFFICE WILL HAVE A LOOK & WILL TRY TO SAVE A TREE, OUR LIFE & OUR EARTH.

IF WE ALL STOP USING ONLY ONE PAPER A SINGLE DAY & REUSE /RECYCLE PAPER WE CAN SAVE THOUSANDS OF TREES,

LONG LIVE OUR UNIVERSE.
