Couples wanting to marry in court but not ready to let their parents knowabout it can breathe free. The Delhi High Court Monday said the provision ofsending a court marriage notice to the family was not mandatory.

The court gave relief to a couple who wanted to marry without the consent oftheir families and did not want the marriage notice to be sent to theirfamilies.

Giving relief to the couple, Justice Ravinder Bhatt ruled that the marriageregistrar need not send the notice and can instead put it up in his office.

Vishal and Anita (name changed) approached the court seeking direction to theregistrar that he should not send the notice of marriage to their homes becausetheir families would then not allow them to marry.

Chandrashekhar Parashara, counsel for the couple, pleaded before the court thatsending a notice is not necessary as the couple was marrying under specialprovisions of the Hindu Marriage Act.

The couple pleaded that they were majors and had the right to lead their livesas they wished.
The court accepted their plea and directed the marriage officer not to send thenotice to their homes.
