Living in a Flat

Few years back when I moved into my own flat, I thought that all my troubles are over as a tenant. Of course, I got relieved from the troubles of my landlord, who often infringed my privacy. One early morning at about 5.30, I suddenly woke up with a banging sound at my roof.

Since it was my first day I did not give much thought to it and simply ignored the sound and went on to sleep again. The next day I was forced to wake up on the same time with the same sound. Now I was little bit disturbed. The sound started coming at the same time every morning. It forced me to stop setting my alarm clock as I no longer required the same.

When I happened to meet the person from whose flat the sound was coming, I asked him about the sound. He hesitated for a while and told me that he used to prepare tea every morning at 5.30 AM. I crush ginger to add flavour to my tea; after hearing this reply I did not know whether to curse him for disturbing my sleep in the morning or to appreciate him for his skill in tea preparation. Anyway now I learn to live with that sound.

After a hectic day in office whenever I go to bed I used to get a screeching sound from the flat next to me. I thought that somebody dragging some heavy article on the floor. I was so curious about the sound I started assuming myself various reasons for the sound. Finally I came to a conclusion that my neighbour may be an insomniac and try to change his sleeping position by dragging his metal cot to every corner of his flat to get sleep. But unfortunately it seems that he is not getting his position right as yet, because the sound is keep coming to me!

On week ends I love afternoon siesta. It gives me energy and freshness to cope up with the rest of the day. So after lunch, whenever I take rest, the call bell rings. One day a courier boy who supposed to deliver his pocket to my neighbour pressed my call bell. The other day few teenage boys who wanted to conduct a survey and asked me to spare few minutes with them. Some times children used to press the bell for getting donation for their school. I could not understand why these people always come at the odd hours.

I used to dry up my clothes outside my balcony. After few hours when I went to take up my dried clothes, I completely surprised to see my clothes in wet condition. I could not understand reason for this. I thought it might have rained little bit. . Next day when I dry up my clothes, I looked above and amazed to see that the person lives above my flat probably not having a washing machine dry his clothes without squeezing it. So the water dipping out from their clothes used to wet my dried clothes. Now I don’t know whether to advice him to purchase a washing machine or request them to squeeze their clothes properly.

Sweepers come to our door every morning to collect the garbage. But few residents of our colony simply throw the garbage at the common areas. Stray dogs roaming around the colony know the habit of our residents and they promptly visit to the common area and started picking up their food articles from the bin. In that process they strew all the garbage on the floor. Residents never bothered to change their habit.

After the above experience I understand that even in your own flat you can not live peacefully. I have also come to a conclusion that most of the residents who live in multistory apartments don’t know how to live in a flat.
