editricon Safety of citizens - by the citizens

Project Manager Bombay
In the wake of the multiple blasts that India has faced, how many of us really feel safe - I'd say none. The Indian population is at a very basic level on the tenterhooks. Frankly, all of us who are in crowded areas feel that we are not safe.

This not just applies to the normal crowd on the streets but even us professionals who lead lives indoors are not safe anymore.

Today returning back in a crowded bus, i was wondering if I am the next target.

Now if you look at this psyche, most people would start feeling this in one way or another, but they might ignore it thinking that it is just a passing thought.

Imagine if every professional is affected to this level and it starts impacting their productivity - the terrorists have achieved their target.

So what happens now? Do we all stop fearing and think the solution will be with us in a few days, that the government will do everything in its power to stop it and we will suddenly feel safe?

First - the government is as helpless as us. So blaming the government WILL NOT help in any way. Out of 100 intel reports, they usually try and strike out 99. The 1 that slips through the intel investigation is the one that causes the most harm. So the government can't be blamed for letting it happen, but the ONLY thing the government needs to do is NOT TO let the media make a mockery of its efforts.

So the first thing is that the media SHOULD NOT be allowed to cover the sites. They need to be banned from this kind of coverage.

Second, the police needs to be very TECHNICAL in their investigation. The current state of police investigation is still very error prone and it is 'ego' oriented.

THIS, thus is the responsibility of the government that it needs to quickly act upon and make all investigations as tight and technical as possible.

So the people in general need to understand this aspect and then question the government but also ensure they are aware of their own responsibility. This is what now the time for us individuals to get up to. We need to now take up the onus on each one of us professionals to keep alert, and to make others alert at every moment to lookout for signs of danger.

Citizen journalism is at its rise, but at the same time, we also now need VERY RESPONSIBLE citizen policing. But for this, we will need a very high level of support from the police. This is something we might not get at an individual level.

But there can be a very high level of understanding between corporates and the police of the city. Police need to use professionals help, through corporate houses, responsible citizens of housing societies, school teachers etc. All these people need to have a background check first - and this activity should be also privatised to some extent because the pressure on the police is very high.

So there is a very high level of responsibility on us professionals to take the step forward through the help of the corporate houses in parallel.

Lets hope we are able to contribute in the best possible way to averting more damage from such events and bring some sanity and safety into the state of affairs.
