I refer to a news item in India today which claims that Comptroller and Auditor  General of India has admitted to inflating the notional loss figures in the 2G allocation. The draft report prepared and submitted to CAG by Director General Audit has pegged the loss at some 2800 INR and has arrived at this figure adjusting the 2001 prices for inflation. The DG has dismissed whether it could be termed a loss at all as it is a stated policy of the government to improve teledensity at the cost of revenue. Comparison with S tel offer submitted to court has also been dismissed by the DG as they had since withdrawn their appeal. But the final report was a bombshell prepared with unterior motives. Any one remembers TN Chaturvedi who supposedly blew the lid of Bofors when he was CAG. This man later won a gubernatorial assignment under NDA as Governor of Karnataka. May be Vinod Rai could expect a similar or more lucrative assignment on his retirement

The JPC has asked both the DG and CAG to depose before them to justify the loss figures. This news item was finding only a passing reference in the media while the visual media literally ignored it. India today claims that this new revelation could make the CBI case very weak agains the accused presently in Tihar. If it were to happen, the entire media owes an apology to those who are unfairly targeted and also to the nation
