FOOD SECURITY BILL

UPA II believes that Food security bill and Direct Benefit Transfer will  fetch them rich dividends in 2014. The food security bill in its present form is watered down version of what was envisaged by NAC and what has been implemented in Raman Singh’s Chattisgarh. It guarantees food entitlements to poor households – 70% in rural areas and 50% in urban areas at subsidized rates. Economists claim that it will be a colossal waste of state resources and even amongst the Government there are people claim DBT should be gradually cover these entitlements as well. The amount of money required to run this welfare program is close to 1 trillion. That economists argue will increase the fiscal deficit and do irreparable damage to economy citing pilferages in the delivery system. These people conveniently ignore that give aways to corporate sector in both direct and indirect taxes amount to much more staggering 5 trillion. The give aways on direct taxes alone is 2 trillion which should naturally have been invested in the industry and created jobs . instead Corporate India went mad after stressed assets overseas like the one with Tatas. The Corus and increase the BoP in current account. The strain on carrying these assets is telling on their balance sheet. State is indirectly funding an inefficient takeover. Why Sharad Pawar exported wheat to Australia at prices less than sold through PDS while offering sops to exporters. If they can not find resources to run this social program then damn with it.

Aruna Roy who had quit NAC has brought forth a startling revelation. Prime Minister who many believe is made to toe the line of UPA chairperson with no independent authority in fact overruled Sonia Gandhi in the welfare schemes authored by NAC. Even a developed economy like USA guarantees minimum wages indexed to inflation to protect their poor but our economist Prime minister went against a Karnataka high court order warranting payment of wages to MNREGS workers under the minimum wages act and refused to pay them statutory minimum wages. How insensible a man could be is seen from this monumental inaction of the Prime Minister in standing up for the poor masses of india who had voted his party to power on two occasions. He is definitely fast becoming a liability for UPA and Congress.
