GOD'S RICHES
Some lunatic SC Lawyer petitoned the Supreme court to order estimatation of wealth bequeathed by the Royal Travancore dynasty to the presiding deity Lord Padmanabha. SC promptly did so while staying the order of temple administration take over by Dewoswam board. There after it was 24x7 reporting of the alleged wealth concealed in chests near the sanctum sanctorum of the deity. The estimates were in the range of lakhs of crores of rupees making Lord Padmanabha the richest god on earth .Rightly so because his consort is the goddess of wealth Mahalakshmi. Some intellectuals opined that the wealth be used for poverty eradication. Many of the believers wanted the wealth not to be touched by the Government. It is amazing that the royalty has kept in tact a booty of crores of rupees safe for centuries whereas our politicians even smuggle grains under PDS to sell in black market. To these rulers some of the elite wanted the wealth to be handed over in order to eradicate poverty. Fortunately in God's own country there is sanity. Both the Ruling dispensation and the opposition - well they are iconoclastic marxists- wanted the wealth to remain with the temple. The present Maharaja wanted the wealth to be used to education and health services. SC could form an independent body of experts to run this trust
This has opened up a pandora's box with claims of wealth hidden in many ancient Hindu temples. True they need to be investigated and the wealth could be used by partially monetising them for educational needs of our poor children and upgrading government schools and Primary Health Centres. That should not be left to Government but to an independent panel of trustees consisting of eminent citizens, judges, lawyers, accountants etc.
