TAMIL NATIONALISM
Plantation labor have always viewed Jaffna Tamils with suspicion for historical reasons of betrayal of their just causes in the past, My friend suggested that because of the historical reasons of Tamil dominance, Union Government of India is tough on talks of tamil nationalism lest it engulf the state of TamilNadu which had whispers of separatism in pre independent days until Annadurai gave up the demand.
While President Rajapakse could not be held responsible unilaterally for the alleged mass murders of innocent Tamils by Srilankan army during the days of a ferocious battle to eliminate Velupillai Prabakaran and defeat LTTE militarily, it is also true that he has failed in creating an atmosphere for a peaceful co habitation of Tamils left in Jaffna, Wavunia and elsewhere with the Majority Sinhalese. His monumental failure to reach out to Tamils and help them in rehabilitation has has a telling effect and he is fast losing support among his own ardent supporers because the terrorists who held the country to ransom have been vanquished but his government is still prevaricating in addressing genuine concerns of Tamil Minorities. What we saw in the vandalisation of buses carrying pilgrims from Sri Lanka as retaliation to the scant regard of the Sri Lankan Government to rehabilitation of Tamils in the war ravaged Jaffna is a grim reminder toboth Srilankan andIndianGovernment to their onerous responsibility of ensuring lasting peace in the island nation by addressing the issues of Tamils through a peaceful dialogue process governed by Rajiv-Jayawardane accord. Already India is accused of having been a silent spectator to the collateral damage the fight against LTTE inflicted on the innocent civilian population. If they still hesitate toenforce their moral authority to address tamils issues, no one can stop Tamil Nationalism from taking a deep infiltration across our own borders. Then it couldbe too late.
