AN IRREVERENT ASSESSMENT OF A REVERED SOUL
Late Paramacharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt, Sri Chandra sekara saraswati is a highly revered pontiff in contemporary India. He is revered as a sage of the century and many of his followers cherish his prophetic messages from time to time during his life time. My admiration for this pontiff increased manifold after reading a compilation of his thoughts and speeches under the title Deivathin Kural( Voice of GOD) . All the articles speak of his vast repository of knowledge and intellect and his humane qualities. His understanding of Vedas, Upanishads and allegorical puranas are astounding. None the less, I could find certain of his views in digestible and not keeping in with a modern world. Even Pope John Paul had the audacity to proclaim that after all Darwinian theory of evolution could be true but this Pontiff had such beliefs that entry of Dalits in to Temples is against our Dharmas and universal adult franchise is a mistake.
In one of his articles the sage has opined that Girls should be married off young before attaining puberty. He reasons that the time she gets to know the physical urges, she should have a Pati from where she will derive solace for her physical needs. He also says that perhaps this is prohibited under Sarada Act and he could be imprisoned for his views. I feel this view unbecoming of a sanyasi who is supposed to have renounced all earthly pleasures. This negates the belief that all of us are created equal with women being subjected to such unhealthy practices.
The sage has taken pains to explain the supremacy of Sanskrit and even argues that it is the mother of all languages through simple arguments. But again viewing from the fact that language is only for communication, supremacy or otherwise is something which is superficial which a sage need not indulge in.
