SPEAKING THE TRUTH
My Father used to narrate a sanskrit couplet which emphasises the need to speak the truth but tactfully. Satyam Bruya Hitam Bruya, Na Bruya Priyam apriyam so goes the couplet. It is always welcome to speak out the truth under any circumstances but none of us appreciate the virtues of being truthful. We try to be full of deceit, wary, circumspection and often cunning.
A new torch bearer of truth has emerged from an unfathomable place. Asif Ali Zardari, the President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan who was an object of ridicule by the media for his various commissions and omissions when his wife was the Prime Minister. The Widower President spoke the truth a little time ago which went un noticed. When USA was mounting pressure on his government to target talibans in Afgan borders, Zardari said those who want to fight Talibans were the ones who created them. This was unpalatable but truth. To fight USSR which occupied Afganistan, US funded terror group of Talibans under the now wanted fugtive Osama Bin Laden. This truth was buried and brushed under the carpet. Zardari spoke out.
This time around, he has publicly acknowledged that indeed Pakistani administration had all along been supporting, funding terror elements to meet short political objectives. It takes immense courage to acknowledge this universal fact. Probably Zardari risked his own life by this candid admission. Zardari left to himself will probably help find an amicable solution to the vexatious issue of Kashmir and other issues with our neighbour But his friends in establishment may not allow him to go thus far. May God be with him
