Nailing Pakistani lies on Mumbai terror attacks

Freelance Journalist

Pakistan is not at all serious about fighting terror if its posturing after 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks is any measure of its seriousness.

The first reaction of the Pakistani Foreign Minister who happened to be in India at the time of the attack was that a hotline should be established between the intelligence chiefs of India and Pakistan to share information on terrorism. Later, the Pakistani Prime Minister Gilani agreed to send the Inter Services Intelligence chief to India to sort out matters.

It was beginning to look as if there was a perceptible change in the attitude of the newly elected civilian government and it gave rise to the hope that things would improve on the terror front. But, that hope was shortlived.

After a meeting of the President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Gilani, Foreign Minister and the ISI chief, Pakistan did a U-turn and refused to send the ISI chief to India for discussions. It was the fear among the Pakistani top brass that Pakistan might end up owing responsibility for the Mumbai terror attack if the ISI chief visits India that made Pakistan backtrack from its previous commitment.

Out of the 10 terrorists who set sail from Karachi for the Mumbai terror attack, nine were killed during counter terror operations by Indian security forces. The lone survivor, Kasab, has confessed that he belonged to Faridkot in Punjab province of Pakistan. He has revealed damning information about the terror plan which have subsequently been confirmed.

Kasab has written to the Pakistani High Commission in India seeking a counsel to represent him in the court. Kasab’s father confirmed to Geo TV during a television interview that Kasab is indeed his son. Kasab’s home in Faridkot was cordoned off after that and nobody is being allowed to meet his family. The Federal Bureau of Investigation from the USA who interrogated Kasab in Mumbai has since visited Kasab’s village and corroborated his story.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawas Sharif has indicated that Kasab belonged to Faridkot. It is sad that only Kasab was apprehended alive. Otherwise, all the others would have made similar confessional statements.

Pakistan denied existence of Laskar-e-Tayyeba hideout in Pakistan. But, it not only located the hideout but also placed its purported chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and the chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Azhar Mazood, under house arrest, when Pakistan was pressured by the United Nations. It is a different matter that Azhar Masoor was let off later. Otherwise, what is the explanation for Pakistan not knowing the whereabouts of Azhar when they had put him under house arrest?

At first the Pakistani establishment claimed that the Mumbai attacks were carried out by non-state players. Then they denied Pakistan’s involvement altogether. Do we need anything more to call Pakistan’s bluff?

Senior Lashar-e-Tayyeba commander and its communication chief, Zahar Shah, has confessed before Pakistani interrogators that he was indeed one of the key conspirators of the Mumbai terror attacks and that he was in constant touch with his operatives on phone during the 60-hour gun battle, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The boat in which the ten terrorists set sail from Karachi has been recovered so also the satellite phone with the map of the return route to Karachi. The call records of mobile phones seized from the terrorists also reveal calls made to Karachi for getting instructions on the course of action after each development during the Mumbai terror attacks.

The Pakistani daily newspaper, Dawn, has reported from Washington that the United States of America has given a tape to Pakistan containing conversations between LeT chief Lakvi and the terrorists. American audio experts have verified the tapes and confirmed that the recordings are genuine. There seems to be some difference of opinion between Pakistan government and Pakistan High Commission at Washington on how to deal with this revelation.

The noose around Pakistani lies is tightening. The sooner they accept the truth and take corrective action, the better. Taking an ostrich like approach and burying their head in sand would serve no useful purpose. The Pakistani lies would be nailed sooner than later.

As the Indian Home Minister, P. Chidambaram explained during a press conference in New Delhi, “If anyone is in the state of denial, anything we give will be denied.” If you refuse to acknowledge what you see, nobody can make you see anything.

Pakistan must realize that it is denying the truth at its own peril. These are irrefutable evidences. The people behind terror attacks in Pakistan may be none other than the ones they are trying to shield.
