Climate Change killing us softly

It’s just the beginning of summer and the heat has already become horrendous. Just like the Indian Premier League, the soaring temperature has become a common theme of discussion among the mass, especially those who report to work in the hours of daylight. The change in climate is nothing but the result of human slip-ups over the years. Scientists’ efforts to enlighten people how they must live their lives to save the Earth have been overlooked by most of us and we continue to do so. The increase in earth’s average temperature – Global warming – should be treated with a far greater extent of priority than I think is happening now.

Global scientists predict that things would get worse if we humans do not take up this issue seriously. Most specialists studing the climate have been connecting some of the events that took place recently as an alarm of global warming. For example, the sadistic Mumbai floods on 26th July, 2005 gave a feeling that we have entered an era of consequences. The worst part is that there still are arguments over whether or not climate change is authentic. A section of our society in India still tends to trust astrologers’ comments that climate change is temporary and the situation would get better once the position of planets and stars improve. I am neither against astrology nor I want to doubt its credibility. I just want to accentuate that not only climate change is real, it’s already at hand, and is resulting in a horrifying new global phenomenon (read manmade natural devastation).

Though the current situation is grave, things can be controlled. Firstly, it is very important to accept that the climate change is manmade. I am saying this because if we do not understand what the cause is, it would practically be impossible to come up with a solution. Human acts, including emission of green house gases from industries and vehicles, and deforestation are the primary causes of global warming. It is need of the hour that all countries of the world join hands to address the issue.

In India, temperature has been increasing by over one degree every 2–3 years. It might sound normal to many; however, a liitle temperature divergence from one year to the next, modest rise of the ocean and melting of the snow, and then out of the blue it is too late to do something about it. We do not want to see 26 July or any other devastating weather pattern again, do we?

We need to put in all efforts to save our lovely planet before it is too late. Well, one could begin by just saving some electricity. Or turning down the use of plastic bags. Or avioding unnecessary use of vehicles.

Simple isn’t it? We all know it doesn’t take a superhero.
