Google, Google & Only Google

Founder of Telecomblogs India

Imagine someday in near future, you login to your 10'' netbook (Google recommended hardware) running Google Chrome OS. Routinely, you click on Chrome Browser icon(Google made) and start surfing the Internet Cloud (Google is pushing ‘Cloud Computing’ more than anything else). You are surfing what Google Search is producing (Content Control). You are bored and feeling homesick. You login to Google earth and visit your school and home or start moving across places on Google maps(Or watching videos on Youtube or chatting on Orkut). You felt now it's time to send few messages & chat with friends- Gmail/Gchat is ready to help. Suddenly your G-phone (Google Smart phone), which is powered by Google Android, rings. Someone has sent you a Spreadsheet. Instead of downloading it, you open it online in Google Docs and modify it online. When you are done, you simply log-out of this Google world.

Come on! Am I exaggerating the Google driven future of Internet, Smart phones & Netbooks? Of course not! After yesterday's launch of Google Netbook OS 'Google Chrome', Google is perhaps one step closer to its 'Ubiquitous Google ' picture of Internet.

SoGoogle Chrome OS Logomeday back I was asked by a friend, can someone really control Internet & its growth? Can it be possible to control Internet, which is still growing at haphazard & uncontrolled manner? I wasn't sure of answer, but I knew it would be possible; if you are Google. Since 1999, Google has dominated many aspect of Internet business which earlier thought of holding less potential (e.g Search business). So be it search or emails or social media, Google stands far ahead of competitors. Whichever way you go, you set new directions & create own industry at end. Every innovation has set milestones (except few failures) and believe it or not, this all has happened in last ten years only.

Some people were of opinion that it is always better to stick to Google than Microsoft(MS). MS is another organization, which holds the ambition of single handedly dominating the Internet & its business. I don't know who is better; Google or MS, but I still love to see Internet as a democratic place rather than dominated by handful organizations with limited innovation ability. And I think most of us will agree with it.

Am I too sacred/worried of Google's omnipresence or have I over-hyped the fear of its ambition? May be, but can you ignore the facts. Who thought in 1999, that Internet Search would be a business? Who thought that Social media will be the next big thing (Orkut)? Who was first to popularize services like Internet TV (Youtube), Google Earth & Maps? Who thought that sea floors can be mapped? Who thought that Spreadsheets can be edited, saved & sent by using single applications on Internet (Google Docs)? Who thought that photo albums can add value to your portfolios and business (Picasa)? Who was first to see blogs as business(Blogger)? Who was the first organization to create world's best ever blogsite which still dominates the blogging world(Blogspot & Google Blogsearch)? Who was first to launch Google Open Book project (Far more successful than MS's open book project though controversial)? I am exhausted! I am still counting on many applications which are to be listed. I am learning Google! I am reading Google! I am surfing Google! Internet has one gateway- Google!

The amount of innovation that Google has brought is simply mind-blowing. The pace at which new products are launched is stunning. I even didn't notice when I shifted from hotmail to yahoo and to gmail and dropped using yahoo search and alta-vista. Hardly had I realized the transition. It was so smooth and obvious. It was need of time. Perhaps Google has done more right things at right time than its competitors. You just can't be so lucky; but Google is.

It was speculated sometime back that Google was about to launch its own OS. May be MS has realized the potential of search very late, but Google is no late in judging the market potential of Open source OS in Smart phone & Netbook segment. It has launched it's two OSs (Android & Chrome- both open source based) within gap of just one year. Astonishing! After Android, which is Open Source based OS powering Smart phones, Chrome is another the Open Source OS, which is going to power your netbook. Netbook is a computer, slightly bigger than your smart phone but smaller than your smallest laptops, with good computing capabilities. And sooner you will be seeing Google Mobile phones, rather smart phones, 'G-phone' powered by Android (hardware business foray), which will drive Smart phone segments. Many of the world's leading Mobile device manufacturing organizations have already shown commitment to launch Smart phones powered by Android, including Nokia (despite its own Symbian OS) and experts are expecting the same trend will be followed in netbook segment as well. It's so systematic; Smart phones to netbook and now PC. You might see a Google OS in coming months driving you Desk & Lap tops. Don't be surprised if you see it!

Why now? After successful launch of Bing, MS has shown that it can still beat competitors in long lost race of search business. Bing is perhaps second only to Google in Internet Search popularity. MS attacked Google's core business with enough success to trouble Google in its own water, then how come Google leave its chance? By launching a Browser centric OS, Google has shown its ambition to compete head on with MS in its OS business. Google has stated that most of the OSs were developed in pre-Internet era (MS's Window), so a browser centric OS is just the right OS to use (Simple, Secure & Speedy- 3S Google Chrome OS).

Will Google be able to manage its portfolio of innovation? Hasn't Google entered into troubled water of OS business which till date is completely dominated by MS? Would it remain focused on search business? Already Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin & Myspace has created enough room for themselves to come out of Google's shadow. Bing is doing same. Yahoo is flourishing with Flickr & Ads. Can you really maintain your track record?

Experts say that managing two OS which overlap few aspects of different segments is tough & tricky. There might be few clashes in OS lineup, though Google has denied it. All this is happening amid the fact that Facebook & Twitter are growing in popularity at par with Google. But still there is enough room at the top to stay afloat, drive innovations & challenge yourself to scale up. Google is simple best at it. Let’s wait & watch! Competition has just begun!
