Bodhu-

Bodhu means wife-An attempt to translate Tagore's famous poem Bodhu - (the first part)

Bodhu

“Sun is soft now, please be fast,

Waits the old lake, day had passed”

As if a whisper, reaches ear

Is it a friend from calling afar?

Beckons shadow of giant Ashwath

And the staircase, bathing spot.

Was in a closed room merged in own

But why they called in loving tone?

Told me “Don’t delay, please be fast

Waits the old lake, noon had passed."

Bracing a pitcher at close to waist,

Took the curvy road in a haste,

Came the lone fields on the route,

And the caressing bamboo shoots

Then the lake that glowed bright,

In the light of twilight.

Amidst shadow of a dark forest,

Sang the cuckoo girl at her best,

In the heart of lake- ocean,

Kept floating in slow motion.

On the way back as we hopped

What a great scene on tree-top!

Soft kissing rays from the high

Painted Moon had sat on the sky

Cracking walls came Ashwath strong,

We ran there at early dawn.

Each autumn, earth turned so cool,

Looked a dew filled pearly pool,

Swayed Karabi in blooming bunch,

Filled the nose in soft fragrance,

Mauve flowers in a bed of green,

Looked so lovely fresh soft- serene.

Green creepers on a lonely wall,

Sent the silent mystery call,

Keeping eye in a tiny crack,

Saw the earth from a hidden track.

Sat there in carefree mood,

Slipping sari fell beneath foot.

It’s a green turf beneath stars,

When a field ends, starts other

Proud heads of royal palm,

Caress sky close, stretching arms,

At the dam where shepherds meet

Splashing water flows rough and steep,

Runs the road straight, not a bend,

Don’t know whereto, at which end?

O the stone city! Big and bold!

This is a naive girl that you hold

With the grasp of mighty fist

Crushed her heart and killed spirit.

I miss the sky and lovely stars

My lonely mud road, fresh air.
