Forced Ranking - killing the individual spirit
From the day the child is ready to hear and understand he knows the
world is ranking him/her. The ranking is based on ‘societal’ definition
of A , B and C . This continues in school and by the time the child is
8 he knows whether he is clever or dumb as defined by the school scores
, this continues through the education system . By the time the child
is through with the education he/she has been defined and conditioned
by ranking. The child now an adult knows that the world is about
survival of the fittest, you have to be an ‘A’ or you will be pushed
out of the race.
The workplace does not change; there is the typical review mechanism that once again defines you either an A, B or C. Is this the way to get the best of the human potential or are we killing potential?
What if everyone was an ‘A’ in something he/she is good at? Everyone is born an ‘A’ full of potential as was indented by the universe and we go about systematically killing the potential.
The bird who sings a song is no less in potential than the tree. Each has a purpose that is unique, each contributes. The nature does not rank.
Yet in the corporate world we are all fascinated by ranking and keep talking about engaging the individual. These two cannot co-exist. The moment you rank you create competition, you create one is better than the other and that some are better than the rest.
Can performance be improved without ranking or ranking each child/individual as an ‘A’? Like you water the plant and provide it shade to grow you nurture the individual and let his/her unique talent flourishes. When the talent flourishes it will add to the growth of the organization and the individual.
