Brutal rape of a Delhi Girl
Whole country is furious at the macabre rape of a girl whose condition is said to be precariously dangerous. Delhi, of late, has earned an epithet of rape-capital for itself. The media, parliamentarians and people are clamoring for death penalty for such a heinous offence. A minor amendment in the IPC can be made in order to allow the court to award punishment upto death.
But the real problem is the inordinate delay in investigation, prosecution and justice delivery. If I recall correctly a case of the rape of a foreign tourist at Bodh Gaya some time back in which the Bihar CM personally monitored and ensured that the rapist was punished without delay. And within a week the rapist was convicted. I admit it was a high-profile case. But I am also of the view that when a criminal can be punished within days through speedy trial then all such cases have the feasibility to be concluded without delay.
