India And Child Marriage
Few days ago i read a report on how court in Saudi Arabia rejected amothers plea on grounds of she not being legal guardian of her child. She had filed a case of nullifying marriage of her daughter who is 8year old to a man who is 53 year old!!!!. The marriage was arranged byher father .
Judge also commented that girls of 10-12 areeligible for marriage. Reading that i said to myself -'oh my god ,howbackward can one be?'.
Today while going through various newssites ,i read a report on one of news site which had title -'India ishub for child marriage' . I was shocked to read that.
Some of shocking facts stated by UNICEF were
# 45% of women married before they turned 18.
# 78,000 women die during childbirth every year.
# One million infants die every year, 40% of them in the first week after birth.
# 40% of total child marriages in world occur in India.
Indiashinning ,India growing ,India goes to moon ,India is second fastestmoving economy, India's high skill work force are globally respected. We all have listen to this ,experienced this but at same time these aresome serious issue which we need to deal with.
Recently a serialis on air with theme of child marriage. It has become very popular. Itdeals with this issue . How a girl child get married at 11 and what allshe goes through. In the end of every episode they give message relatedto this issue too. Its good initiative.
But we require lot of such initiatives by leaders , by responsible citizens like you and me to deal with this issue.
We do have law against child marriage but how successfully it is implemented can be understood by this UNICEF report.
Issues related to custom ,tradition cant only be stopped by making law. To stop such things one needs social change.
Society has to work to remove problem in society.
