Predicaments of ManMohan Singh
Some time back in an interview MMS said that working with a coalition government is very difficult, because, the companion factions keep on making unreasonable demands continuously and unless they are fulfilled that coalition government cannot work properly; in addition to that, these unreasonable demands put inexplicable pressures on the government making it totally helpless. These comments he made almost immediately after Mamata Banerji demanded redress of previous rail fares in the recent Railway budget.
He referred to three parties particularly in this context, in that he included, Communist party, NCP of Sharad Pawar and Trunamul Congress.
First, we take communist party there demand is very sinister. They have agreed to support this government from outside on only one condition that no decisive action shall this central government ever take to finish Naxalites and Maoist movements. Their demand is that only some topical action this government can take only to fool the people of India and create an impression that the government continues to resolve the problem. No matter how much of atrocities these terrorist forces commit, the government shall do nothing to control them. As we see due to this condition no really substantial action, government takes. They plead innocent at the same time to continue fooling people of this country. ManMohan Singh is very much distressed due to that.
The passionate desire to complete the five-year tenure at any cost is primarily responsible for this situation. Congress party men said to me that at any cost they should complete this five-year period, even if it costs many lives and the whole country goes to hell. All those things are immaterial to them before the prestige of their party. This has made the problem of Naxal and Maoist terrorists formidable.
Next, we take NCP of Sharad Pawar. Sharad Pawar never asks any demands for the State of Maharashtra or people of that State. All he wants from MMS is that, whenever his colleagues commit financial frauds no punitive action center shall take. Often it becomes very embarrassing but nonchalantly he continues to protect his fraudulent colleagues. Sharad Pawar has no concern for the people who voted for his party; he wants to protect his colleagues at any cost and for that, he makes those demands as a cost for the support, his party gives to the coalition government. This adamant attitude has affected the progress of Maharashtra State but he has no qualms. Money that should go into the development work is ending in the pockets of his friends. One effect of this is the present day famine in the State. Many co-op banks are destroyed by his party men but they continue as ministers and stay in power. If MMS government takes action against these corrupt NCP members, Sharad threatens to withdraw support. Many senior Congress persons refuse to call Sharad pawar's party as N congress party but they have named it as N corruption party!
Mamata Banerji is very different from these two co-partners in the coalition. He told that she never asks any help to protect any wrongs done by her party persons. As a matter of facts, her party people so far never committed any financial or other type of frauds. All she demands is for the people of her State. However, the manner she works is very discomforting. The air of blackmail in her demands unnerves the center, he lamented.
While satisfying such demands which cause, at times, tremendous pressure on the exchequer. Quite often, Congress party keeps their agenda on side to allow the demands of these partners and that makes running the show difficult. As a result, he told me the country suffers and people never come to know of that. If Communist party and Sharad Pawar’s NCP were demanding for the people that would not be so much of the trouble but their demands are always very unreasonable and mostly against the good of common man.
While facing people these two parties create a picture that they are working for them and keep on fooling the voters. If Congress party were to favor only just demands and refused the unreasonable demands, it would loose the power. This is their dilemma. The blame should go on all the political parties, those who make such demands and those who relent to the pressures.
