Human Communication Model
Human Communication has been defined as the establishment of a relationship such that the actions, thoughts, feelings and intentions of one person evoke a response in another.
Communication is more likely to be effective where the source is believed to have expertise, high status, objectivity or likeability, but particularly where the source has power and can be identified with. Thayer notes that communication occurs only when someone takes something into account. Yet, some individuals react differently to the multiple potential meanings of a given information source. One cannot always be sure what a given source/ sender will elect to encode and as to what the receiver will choose as the message. Indeed it is possible that the receiver will not sense any message at all. The purpose of human communication is to affect the behavior of the receiving person.
Thus, purpose of human communication situation the difficulty arises from the fact that the receiving person as well as the transmitting person can affect the meaning ultimately communicated. The person at the receiving terminal, by reason of personal psychological nature and background, may not see any meaning at all in a given piece of data. Perhaps, even worse, this person may select an incorrect or unintended meaning. Maslow has observed that for many human communication situations a given cue can be associated with two sets of meanings, the 'intrinsic' and the 'symbolic'.
In 'intrinsic set' the information content is associated with the objective properties of the cue itself. In 'symbolic set' the information source is associated with the emotional state of the perceiver.
