editricon Terrorism is Here to Stay

As the world hurtles rapidly to the unknown future one thing becomes clearer every passing day that the terrorism will come to stay.  Only the other day a vehicle carrying an Israeli diplomat burst into flames by a sticker bomb. It just happened on the nose of P.M’s residence – a highly protected zone – indicative of how fragile is our vulnerability. It’s so easy to plant a bomb and blow up the target instantly. It may be due to age long enmity between Jews and Muslims. There are multiple other reasons for terror.   It’s improbable that it can be contained.

The reasons may be as follows. It’s unlikely there will be any general concurrence on the analysis.

First and foremost it is wrong to say terrorists have no religion, ethnicity or nationality. Major terror threat stems from religious belief. Religion is nobody’s monopoly. They consider they are the true guardian of their religion. It’s their bounden duty to protect the purity of their religion. By any standard they are heroes -- ready to sacrifice anything for a sacred cause. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda and similar other outfits are religiously motivated--all are devout religionist.  British Islamist Anjem Choudary recently launches 'Shariah for India,' Vows to Demolish Hindu Temples and Bollywood. “Accordig to Sharia, Muslims are not allowed to participate in elections…Muslims must not abide by any other but the law of Allah”, he says.  Mr Choudary exhorted the Muslims to rally around the Indian parliament on March 2nd & 3rd to demand Sharia law. It portends wider implication for the future, even if it fizzles out this time.

Spread of education and access to information are potent factors. People are more educated nowadays and they are exposed to all kinds of information – history, scripture and current affairs. It creates awareness among people as individuals and  groups and help to rake up issues of past misdeeds. Violence is prescribed in many scriptures – many are full of incendiary materials. The Bible is not all about extending other cheek after being slapped on one. Holy wars or crusades were fought in the past. However, there is no prescription for violence under any pretext found in Buddhist and Jain scriptures.  But famous Shaolin warriors are there. During Vietnam War many monks committed self immolation in protest against US aggression. In Sri Lanka monks gave consent killing of Tamil Tigers. Notable exception is the peaceful procession of thousands of Buddhist monks in Myanmar during crack down of military junta on Aung San Suu kyi.

Scriptures are a great source of inspiration. Which part or point of the book will appeal to whom and in what way is unpredictable. The interpretation is so diverse leading to divergence of views across the world. Every passing day this divergence is widening. Terrorists are fortified with invincible strength of beliefs. It will hardly be possible to eliminate it by brute force. There is no ideological antidote to counter it due to its appalling array of multiplicity.

Human history is full of conflicts between religious groups, ethnicity, race or caste. The might has always been right. It was not possible then to repulse the injustice but to endure. Now, it evokes retaliation. So, why not avail it as the opportunity knocks. Babri Masjid demolition and Kosovo massacre are such examples.  Muslims worldwide have genuine grudge against America. 9/11 World Trade Centre attack was an attempt at venting vengeance. To deny it will tantamount to our indifference to the Muslim grievances. Again, it will be wrong to say no Hindu terrorist exists. Who burnt Graham Steins and his sons alive? Who are responsible for Malegaon and Ajmer Sharif and other blasts? Are they not religiously motivated?

Technological progress makes contact with like-minded people all over the world easy. They can get better organized and coordinated. Access to latest technology is breeze. Terrorists use the cutting-edge explosive devices with greater destructive power and reach.

Now, let us look at a few palpable non-issues. Shylock the Jew in Merchant of Venice is denigration to a particular race. Staging of the play is some sensitive areas may pose problem in future. Slaying of Mahisasura -- a clay idol of 'demon' ubiquitous in any Durga puja pandal – fomenting resentment as Mahisasura belonged to a lower caste. How much furore was created recently by the Ultra Orthodox Jews over a dress code of 8 year old girl in Israel. These Jews appear to be worse than Taliban. What a fuss has been created over a scholarly work of Ramanujan’s ‘Three Hundred Ramayanas’. The issues are numberless. The line of demarcation is blurred. Many incidents of today will provide fodder for tomorrow’s terrorism.

So, where is the end of rising dissension? There is no guarantee that it can be eradicated. There are endless ideas embedded in every scripture and history, it will be difficult to forecast which spark will ignite whose mind causing conflagration and when. It depends how one identifies with the cause. Sporadic outburst of terrorism of any kind is going to be a part of modern living. There is no escape. We have to simply brace up to face it, without letting up constant vigil.
