editricon A story of communication and its development.

I often wonder how intense the human mind is!

It must be in the prehistoric days when man first learnt how to communicate, maybe make calls- scream loud- from one treetop to another in order to indicate or inform a change in the surrounding. Ever since the LONG DISTANCE calls have made their presence felt.

The easiest way to express one is by artistically putting lines in the form of a drawing or a picture; the early men did that to communicate their stories to the coming generations. With a language script and the invention of paper, the newspaper became an efficient way of encrypting the thoughts and spreading news. The Morse code helped in telegraphy; scaling distances than imagined.

The communication revolution continued with the invention of a Telephone. Making calls was informing near and dear ones about “good or bad” news initially. Exchanging thoughts to now chitchatting has given a new characteristic to the initial purpose of the invention.

With invention of radio and the television, broadcasting rose to a new level. Today, any show can be broadcasted live to numerous countries with a difference of only a few minutes overall.

Another important invention- Computer and computer networking not only made the tabulation or computation process simpler and exchange of mails easier but also made sharing of data. The two treetops are now two different countries or two different continents -people at different places feel as though they are together.

The development does not stop here- Cell phones or mobile phones have led to revolutions beyond imagination. Initially the mobile was a big bar with buttons, similar to a cordless telephone-wireless.
It was not long back, until the black and white, simple mobile phones touched the market. From the initial small screened to the present sleek, the growth is tremendous.

The cell phone is now an everyday, all-purpose commodity. To be frank, and going by the ad provided by the IDEA cellular service, the 10-digit number is like a unique key-hash code, representing the identity of each individual, almost as a name. To add to it the numerous features allow oneself to be spoilt.
Television, Computer, Internet, Games, Camera, Photo album, Video player as well as the recorder, Telephone, MP3 player, Timer, Watch can be just one thing the “cell phone.” With the Iphone leading the market now, it cannot be better than this.

The usage does not restrict to the technological reasons, it has now become an accessory. The “look” along with the features attracts buyers. A Mobile phone is a general-purpose commodity that HAS to be taken along like a bag.

The mobile revolution continues. The enhanced versions are developed faster. Within months of buying a new cell phone, one realises that there are better-featured phones available in the market.

I can only image the changes that will occur in coming 2 or 3 years. USB driver ports within the cell phone, larger memory- making storage even better, and ATM card embedded within. Features with finger printing, speech recognition and other Artificial intelligence characteristics allow the system to be much more than just an instrument.

I can also imagine personalized mobile phones made on request. Attributes such as games or movies on demand; For a doctor an intelligent system helping him treat a patient, and a recognition system to alert when a criminal is in sight are all possible. Some physical enhancements could also include a cigarette case attached to it to make the smokers a little happy.

The hand achieves whatever the mind perceives. A simple communication device has now turned into a multipurpose gadget. I am sure the future holds many such surprises.
