Professional or the profession..?Me or my father..?
The first day of the Bachelor of Engineering, the first question of the professor ‘define the professional’. I think I learnt a lot in those four years, except the definition of the professional.I studied from welding to soldering to the reactor design concepts which even 1% is not implemented anywhere in any form.Still I talk so eloquently on all those topics, all those equations, all those mass transfer and heat transfer phenomenon.I talk in front of the so called professionals and argue also sometimes with all my defending points on the subjects.
My father in the arechanut plantation when he is looking at when the arechanuts need to be plucked or whenever I walk with him in the plantation and I start explaining him also that which pesticide is prescribed for this disease of the plant. No wonder he smiles and turns his head with that same neutrality and walks ahead and instructs the workers there.
He tells that moment “This has been our family profession for ages and there above the bunches have become orange and they need to be plucked off”.
Now I think “Is my father is also a professional??”.But he never learnt like me the professional dressing, professional smiling, professional talking or whatever could be mentioned as professionalism values. But he does his profession.Another lady who paints so beautiful paintings says she is an amateur painter, not still a professional.Another dancer put her steps so well and curved her body to any extent and she got money too for her performances. She tells now that she is an IT professional because she did a professional course and her body has lost all the curves now and she hardly dances.
All the engineering colleges have so many branches of engineering subjects, but irrespective of the streams of the subjects present, the colleges are mainly the outlets of IT professionals. And the best characteristic of the courses or students there is that they have the greatest adaptability to work in any field,do any work, live anywhere and so many bests perhaps. I can do so many things, but not with the passion and love and the confidence that my father possesses about his so called profession being a nonprofessional.
Now the definition is becoming still more complicated than before for me.Who is professional?Me or my father or the painter or the dancer?
