Indians in US
On 11th Feb an incident happened in NJ which set me thinking. It was reported in NJ times that a 41 year old man tried to stab himself and commit suicide and then jumped out of his 6th floor apartment sustaining severe injuries and was subsequently admitted to the Jersey city medical centre. The reporter was a Mr "Hack". It tested my credibility to read the report that a man can try to commit suicide by stabbing himself. (Even samurai found it difficult to commit seppuku and had a second ready and waiting to behead them the moment they have made the ritual cut.) And failing in this he broke his window panes and jumped out! The police, incredibly enough seem to abet this story by stating that the door to his apartment was locked from the inside! The man in question is Nishesh Singal, a close friend of mine. I find it hard to believe that he would want to commit suicide. He is a top notch computer engineer holding a very good position and is completely satisfied with the life he leads in the US. He even voted in the recent elections. Why is it that No NRIs living in the area have even raised a whimper of protest (are NRIs capable of protesting loudly enough to be heard by anyone!?). Do the Indians living in the area feel outraged at this incident and pursue the police to investigate deeper? Is there any solidarity? Or is it every man for himself? There have been quite a few reports of Indians being the target of attacks and some have even died.
