Is The World We Live in Fair?
I think the answer that most people will say "no" and I agree. One fundamental fact that virtually all people will agree with is that no one is perfect and no society is perfect. In the light of these imperfections, there will be many injustices of differing degree and kind. What makes things even more pessimistic is that even with advancement and knowledge, things are not getting better. To make a long story short, inequalities, injustices, sexism, bigotry, etc. all exist. The best thing that we can do is admit to them and seek to lessen them
To me, fairness is in whether what happens to you in life is in line with what you deserve. By that definition, of course the world isn't fair. If it were, for example, only bad people would get cancer or get injured or killed in car wrecks.
Is the world today fairer than what's portrayed in "The Crucible?" Definitely At least nowadays the government is a lot less likely to persecute you for no good reason.
I don't think the world we live in is fair. If you think about it even good people can suffer. People get diseases when they have done nothing to deserve it. Others are abused and neglected, even children, who are innocent victims. This isn't fair!
As far as the rest of the world. Is it fair that we waste food while others are starving TO DEATH? Is it fair that movie stars and athletes make more making a movie or playing a game than I will in a lifetime. I don't think so!
If life were fair everyone would be living comfortably and have enough to eat and drink. Only the bad people in the world (murderers, terrorists, etc.) would suffer. We would have world peace, no hunger, people would help each other and be kind.
This is a topic we can look at from a pragmatic or spiritual perspective. If one is spiritual then life is fair as one will either receive or experience those life events assigned to be part of life. Consequently, we will also be given the strength to deal with whatever is thrown our way if we choose.
Pragmatically, hell no life isn't fair. Innocent people are convicted. Guilty people go free. Drunk drivers kill people. Children die at the hands of their parents, or family, or strangers, or pedophiles. Governments in the world still commit genocide. And etc.
Perhaps we should consider what part and/or obligation we have in making the world fairer.
Life is what you make of it. If you follow the rules, it'll probably be fairer than it would be if you didn't. However, LIFE is not always fair. People have horrible accidents, but that's not necessarily the world's fault. Are people falsely accused? Of course. Do people make mistakes? Every day. Do innocent people die at the hands of others? Yes. Because of these things, I would say that the world might be more unfair than fair.
