Armageddon

Unprecedented rains and flooding in South India and the Philippines, two major earthquakes and tsunami warnings – all in the space of a week. We have become so accustomed to major natural calamities described as the worst in a decade, 50 years, in living memory – as also the increasing frequency with which they occur – that we have become almost desensitized to them.

Global warming, greenhouse gasses are the usual suspects; and for sure they are major contributors, but is that the complete explanation? I’m not convinced it is. Yes, global temperatures are rising but only by a fraction of a degree every year. If the cause is so gradual, why are the effects being felt at hurricane speed? Mother Nature seems to have gone berserk recently. It’s almost as if she has a personal grudge against us humans and is showing her displeasure in no uncertain terms. Something is seriously wrong with this planet we call home. It is almost as if earth is in its final death throws.

Doomsday scenarios have been around for over a decade now: melting of polar ice caps causing rise in ocean levels and obliterating coastal cities like Mumbai and San Francisco. However, even the doomsayers give mankind at least another 50 years before they need to start heading for the hills, but at the rate our planet seems to be tearing itself apart, I’m beginning to wonder if we have that long. I’m not overly religious, but it almost seems that God has had it with mankind. Are we heading for a 21st Century Sodom and Gomorrah, but on a global scale?

Some spiritualists think it is quite probable. A well known medium in Mumbai who is said to be in constant communication with her two long dead sons, through automatic writing and telecommunication, has published a book where they have warned her to prepare for what they call the “Shift”. According to the dead souls, God is so disgusted with us humans that He has made up His mind to wipe us off the planet and populate with a new race, which hopefully will take better care of His world. In this scenario, in the not too distant future, the earth’s magnetic poles will suddenly reverse themselves, resulting in cascading hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that will wipe out the human race. Only a few chosen souls will be saved, though it is not clear how.

So is Armageddon imminent? Is it too late to repent and save the planet? Only the Big Guy Upstairs has the answers – and he’s not telling. Now I’m wondering whether to save up for my old age, or just blow up my savings in one spectacular Bacchanalian orgy.
